A vintage classical guitar is sometimes also known as “nylon string guitar” or “spanish guitar”. It is basically a musical instrument from the family of instruments called chordophones.

The main characteristic of a vintage classical guitar are

its shape (modern guitar shape, or historic guitar shapes)

its strings (gut or today mainly with nylon; the bass-strings additionally being wound with a thin metal thread)

the instrumental technique (the individual strings are usually plucked with the fingers (or the fingernails); as opposed to using a plectrum)

its historic repertoire, though this is of lesser importance, since any repertoire can and is played on the guitar.

Just the name classical guitar does not mean that only classical repertoire is performed on it. But instead all kinds of music, whether classical, flamenco or jazz or for any other form can be performed on it.

Vintage Classical Guitars are typically played in a seated position. IT is designed to allow for the execution of solo polyphonic arrangements of music in much the same manner as the pianoforte can. This is the major point of difference in design intent between the classical instrument and other designs of guitar. Flamenco guitars are very similar in construction, but are associated with a more percussive tone.

In Mexico, the popular mariachi band includes a range of guitars. In Colombia, the traditional quartet includes a range of instruments too, from the small bandola to the slightly larger tiple, to the full sized classical guitar. The requinto also appears in other Latin-American countries as a complementary member of the guitar family, with its smaller size and scale, permitting more projection for the playing of single-lined melodies.

Classical vintage guitars are sometimes referred to as classic vintage guitars. In recent years, the series of guitars used by the Niibori Guitar orchestra have gained some currency, namely:

Sopranino guitar (an octave and a fifth higher than normal); sometimes known as the piccolo guitar

Soprano guitar (an octave higher than normal)

Alto guitar (a 5th higher than normal)

Prime (ordinary classical) guitar

Niibori bass guitar (a 4th lower than normal); Niibori simply calls this the “bass guitar”, but this assigns a different meaning to the term than other parts of the community use, as his is only a 4th lower, and has 6 strings

Contrabass guitar (an octave lower than normal)

Fender vintage guitars of the pre-1966 era are most important ones for most collectors. It was the year of 1965 that CBS has taken over Fender.

By the end of 1965, the general look and feel of the Fender vintage guitars had changed significantly. Most of the guitar enthusiasts are of the opinion that the quality of the vintage Fender Guitars and Fender amps suffered as CBS employed more “mass production” manufacturing processes to the Fender guitars. Fender.

There were several other changes also. All these changes affected Fender guitars very seriously. 1966 brought an era of “large” pegheads, less contoured bodies, and much higher production numbers. The constant emphasis of CBS to cut costs, production time and effort generally led to much lower quality. Because of this, 1966 and later Fender instruments are considered far less collectible than vintage pre-CBS Fender guitars.

Vintage Sigma Guitars is also a popular category among the guitar lovers and guitar enthusiasts. In fact most of the Sigma Guitars now come under the category of Sigma Vintage Guitars, because this is a brand, which was once manufactured by the world famous C F Martin but has now been discontinued for more than 10 years.

Wow, well Sigma is a brand owned by Martin and their very similar guitars. Sigma started in 1970 so you have a first year model. It seems like that would make it worth at least a pretty good bit. Sigma Serial Numbers do not provide an indicator of the year in which a particular model was built. However, most Sigma models were offered only for a limited number of years, so that most models’ construction dates can be narrowed down to a reasonable range.

In 1970, guitar maker C F Martin created a line of inexpensive guitars, with the name of Sigma Guitars, made in part from laminated wood, instead of the solid wood used in their main line. (The name may have originated by turning the Greek letter Sigma (?) on its side.) Construction moved from Japan (1970 - 83), to Korea (1984 - 93/94), to Taiwan (1993 - 2007).

The first Vintage Sigma Guitars, were dreadnought acoustics, DR-1 through DR-7 (D for dreadnought and R for rosewood). Sigma built the GCS (Grand Concert Series) to Martin’s 000 body specifications. There were models in the CS (Classical Series). Other instruments included mandolins, banjos, acoustic and electric basses and solid body and hollow body electric guitars. Some solid body electric guitars were made by Tokai Guitars Company, LTD. After finishing, “Each Sigma instrument was brought into the Martin factory to be inspected and adjusted by Martin personnel before going to the authorized retail store for retail sale.”

The Sigma guitar line was discontinued in 2007. As such you can not buy a new Sigma Guitar as of today, and you have to buy a Vintage Sigma Guitar.

An archtop guitar is a steel-stringed acoustic or semi-acoustic guitar with a full body and a distinctive arched top, whose sound is particularly popular with blues and jazz players.

Typically, a archtop vintage guitar has:

F-holes similar to members of the violin family.

Humbucker pickups.

The archtop guitar was invented as late as in the 1890s by Orville Gibson, founder of the Gibson Guitar Corporation, who was primarily a mandolin builder and had previously built archtop mandolins. Because of this late history, you can today find lots of Vintage Archtop Guitars in market.

1922 was the year to be precise, when Lloyd Loar was hired by the Gibson Guitar Company to redesign their instrument line in an effort to counter flagging sales, and in that same year the Gibson L5 was released to his design. The L5 introduced a number of innovations, the most striking being the violin-like f-holes. Although the new instrument models flopped commercially and Loar left Gibson after only a couple of years, Gibson instruments signed by Loar now are among the most prized and celebrated in stringed-instrument history. Perhaps the most revered instrument from this period is the F5 mandolin, but probably the more broadly influential was the L5 guitar, which remains in production to this day.

Archtop guitars were subsequently made by many top American luthiers, notably John D’Angelico of New York and his student Jimmy D’Aquisto, William Wilkanowski, Charles Stromberg and Son in Boston, and by other major manufacturers, notably Gretsch, Epiphone, and Selmer of Paris. Archtop guitars were particularly adopted by both jazz and country musicians, and in big bands and swing bands.

Vintage Archtop Guitars are hugely popular among the guitar lovers all over the world. This website is the ideal place for you to search best deals on Vintage Archtop Guitars for sale and buy Vintage Archtop Guitars online through auctions on ebay. We search millions of ebay listings to bring you the best deals. Feel free to browse through our listing pages.

Vintage Gretsch Guitars is also a hugely popular category, when it comes to buying vintage guitars for investing or for amateur purposes. However I am not a big fan of them.

Vintage Gretsch Guitars are mostly the models endorsed by Chet Atkins made from 1954 to 1961 (single cutaway models). Older Gretsch models (pre-1970) don’t tend to hold up to time as well as other makes. Older binding materials and glues tend to deterior with age. This can cause expensive repairs such as neck sets and binding replacement. Additionally, Gretsch electronics like Guitar pickups, Guitar switch/knob layout is not as sonically sound or versatile as those of other makers during the same period.

Despite these drawbacks, Gretsche Vintage Guitars from the mid 1950’s have a certain “look” that is undeniably cool. Models most highly regarded are the single cutaway versions with western trim. Engraved position markers (”cow and cactus”), the “G” brand, and western pick guards is what makes Gretsches valuable and collectible. This especially applies to the 1954 to 1956 western models such as the 6120 Chet Atkins hollow body, the 6121 Chet Atkins solid body, the 6130 Roundup and the 6022 Rancher.

The 6136 White Falcon Gretsch Vintage Guitar and 6134 White Penguin Gretsche Vintage Guitar from 1954 to 1957 are also highly collectable instruments. These have DeArmond pickups, engraved pearl position markers, vertical Gretsch logo, “Cadillac” tailpieces and gold sparkle binding. Unfortunately, after 1957 many of these attributes disappear, making later models less desirable.

Gretsch acoustic archtops appeal primarily to collectors only, as players tend to steer clear of these models. Gretsch’s reputation is based more on their electric guitars than acoustic. The quality of Gretsch workmanship is not as good as Gibson and Epiphone instruments from the same period. Due to poor material and/or construction techniques, many older models haven’t survived the test of time. The high-end acoustic archtops with “cat-eye” soundholes are visually appealing and collectible for their unusual looks. Other models with conventional “F” holes are much less desirable.

The original Gretsch company based in Brooklyn, New York went out of business in 1981. Recently a Japanese company bought the Gretsch name and starting producing copies of the original 1950’s Gretsch instruments.

What are the different types of Vintage Guitars

You would have heard a lot of terms when it comes to Vintage Guitars. There are acoustic guitars, electric acoustic guitars, semi-hollow guitars, electric guitars, twelve string guitars, four string bass guitars, five string bass guitars, the list goes on. But you can classify all these types of vintage guitars all into three broad categories.

Acoustic Vintage Guitars: They produce big enough sound for a very small audience without any form of amplification. They are popularly used in country music and classical music. Although they come in different shapes and sizes, but a few things like a hollow body, a sound hole, a bridge, a neck and a tuning machine; are common in all of them.

Electric Vintage Guitars: They are not able to produce loud volumes without amplification. In fact, you’ll hardly hear it even with the slightest background noise. They usually have solid bodies, usually have longer necks than their acoustic counterparts and also have in-built pick ups for sound amplification. They are very popular in pop and rock music.

Electric Acoustic Vintage Guitars: These are basically acoustic guitars with special amplification. The amplification is such that you can’t achieve with a regular acoustic guitar mic’ed without having feedback problems. This one comes with a special pick up that amplifies the sound without compromising the acoustic character of the guitar. The very good ones are usually very expensive.

Electric Bass Vintage Guitars: These are special guitars that are built to produce those deep notes. They are specially built to handle the stress and strain of the pull by those big strings. They are mostly built with solid bodies. Although there are a few that have semi-hollow bodies.
